Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a term describing treatment with light in order to stimulate and accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. This treatment has also been called Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or cold laser therapy.

High-powered lasers are used in our office for removing moles, skin resurfacing, eliminating brown or red discoloration and removing unwanted hair. In contrast, PBM is used to treat joint, tendon and muscle injuries, to speed healing after procedures and to stimulate wound repair. PBM is also being investigated for its role in treating side effects from cancer therapy, pain, traumatic brain injury, and macular degeneration among other conditions.

PBM can be thought of as “human photosynthesis” or “mammalian photosynthesis” as it is also used in veterinary medicine. Light energy has different effects on our cells depending on the color (wavelength) of light, power, and the time that the light is applied. In general, tiny doses have little or no effect, small doses are effective in promoting healing response, larger doses have inhibiting effects (useful for treating pain) and even larger doses can be used to remove abnormal tissue. Using the proper dosage and wavelength is key in achieving the therapeutic goal, as too much or too little will be ineffective.
