Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

You’ve finally had enough of shaving, plucking, waxing…You’ve had a consultation with a board certified doctor or other medical practitioner with experience in laser use.  You know you are a good candidate* for Laser Hair Removal, and now you’re ready to get started.

What should you do to prepare for your first treatment?

Know that you will require more than one treatment.

In fact, most people need 4-8 treatments on average to see the best results. Treatments are generally spaced about six weeks apart.

Hair has three phases of growth: an active growth phase, an intermediate non-growth phase, and a resting phase with no hair follicle present. Duration of hair growth cycles vary with the location on the body. The laser can only eliminate the hair that is currently in an active growth cycle, so multiple treatments are necessary in 6 to 8 week intervals to remove hair from most areas. Final results may not be apparent for several months after treatment.

Stay out of the sun.

A tan can cause unwanted side effects such as skin lightening or burns.

This also means you should avoid using sunless tanners/self tanners.  Lasers “look” for pigment, and the last thing you want to do is have the laser target your skin instead of the hair.  This is why Laser Hair Removal tends to be popular during cooler months, when people aren’t spending time in the sun.  Plus by starting in winter, you’ll be ready for bare legs and bikinis by summer!

“Do NOT’s:”

  • Do not pluck
  • Do not wax
  • Do not do anything to remove the hair by the root.  The laser needs to be able to “see” the hair in order to target it. Which leads to the next tip…

DO shave.

smooth skin

Long hair can cause the laser to expend energy treating hair above the root.  This can lead to burns and unsatisfactory results. You may want to shave no less than 24 hours before treatment so your skin won’t be already irritated the day of treatment.

Here’s a list of areas commonly treated by laser for hair reduction:

  • Upper lip, chin, sideburns
  • Back
  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Underarms
