IPL Photofacial | BBL 'HERO' for
skin rejuvenation

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial treatment is a popular, FDA-cleared treatment that uses light to restore and rejuvenate the skin.  Also known as “Photo-rejuvenation”, this non-invasive procedure is perfect for eliminating unwanted or excess “reds” and “browns” in the skin and for toning the skin by building collagen.  Treatments are painless and require no downtime, making them ideal for men and women who want to revitalize their appearance without having to put their social or work life on hold.

Dr. Bowen and his staff of highly trained Clinical Laser Specialists are leading providers of the Sciton “suite” of laser and light treatments, including:  ProFractional Therapy, the HALO hybrid fractional laser treatment and Sciton’s version of IPL, called Forever Young BBL HERO.

The BBL HERO represents a major upgrade to photofacial technology, delivering more comfortable, less time-consuming and more powerful treatment.

IPL Photofacial Before and After*

IPL Photofacial before and after images illustrate the power of IPL therapy when reducing signs of aging and correcting skin impurities. As with any cosmetic procedure, results will vary.* However, each patient receives noticeable improvements to their skin for a dramatically more youthful look.

How Do PhotoFacials Work?

Pulses of intense light are directed at the skin during treatment to target excess pigment and to build collagen.  Your eyes and the eyes of the treatment providers will be protected throughout treatment using special eye shields and glasses.  The pulses of light pass through the tissue without disrupting the surface of the skin.   As such, a photofacial is what we call a “non-ablative” treatment.  The light heats the target area with thermal energy, stimulating a variety of therapeutic responses:

Reduces redness and improves vascular lesions

The thermal energy from the photofacial improves splotchy skin tone.  It targets vascular lesions like red spots, broken capillaries, facial veins, port wine stains, and more.   The IPL photofacial heats blood vessels below the skin’s surface, causing them to constrict and/or collapse. This action effectively shrinks small facial veins and reduces redness caused by vascular lesions or rosacea.

Rejuvenates the skin

During BBL HERO photofacial treatment, light safely penetrates the skin to heat the upper layer of the dermis with thermal energy.  This energy instantly revitalizes skin, helping it look more youthful and radiant.  IPL photofacial treatment also provides long-term rejuvenation by triggering the body’s natural healing process, resulting in increased collagen production.  Increased collagen production restores and strengthens skin, improves skin tone and texture, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Repairs pigmentation problems

Sun damage causes pigmented lesions, i.e., pesky “sun spots”, brown spots”,  and “age spots” that “muddy” the complexion.  The spots are created by accumulations of melanin, the pigment the skin uses to protect itself from the sun.

An IPL photofacial corrects sun damage by targeting the melanin below the skin. Thermal energy is selectively absorbed in to the melanin, causing it to shatter and break apart.  The fragmented melanin is then gradually reabsorbed by the body over several weeks’ time. It is normal and desirable for the dark spots you treat with BBL to get darker right after treatment.

Clears active acne

Clinical studies show that photofacials combat active acne in two ways.   First, the thermal energy from the IPL light constricts the blood supply of sebaceous glands, reducing the overproduction of sebum (the skin’s oil that contributes to breakouts). Second, the light energy destroys acne-causing bacteria.

What Can IPL PhotoFacials Treat?

Photofacials can treat:

  • Redness or rosacea
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Small vessels
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Active acne
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Large pores

How Much Do Photofacials Cost?

Pricing for BBL HERO photofacial treatment at Dr. Robert Bowen’s office is by-the-area, with discounts offered when multiple areas are treated on the same day.    BBL HERO technology is much faster than that of previous BBL devices, making it possible to treat multiple areas, even large ones, in the same treatment session in a reasonable amount of time.

You must have a consultation with Dr. Bowen before receiving IPL photofacial treatment.

Results

Many patients report seeing noticeable results after one treatment.

However,  getting a significant pigment problem corrected using BBL generally requires at least two treatments (spaced about a month apart).

After the pigment problem is under control, Dr. Bowen typically recommends a “regimen” of 2 to 4 photofacial treatments per year, depending on your age, the amount of sun damage you started with before treatment, and how much pigment was cleared in your initial photofacial treatments.

All BBL treatments provided in Dr. Bowen’s office include the specific anti-aging protocol called  “Forever Young BBL” (FYBBL),  a technology proven to turn back the clock on aging skin.

From Sciton’s Forever Young BBL brochure:  “Imagine taking a photo a decade from now and looking better than you do today.  It may sound impossible, but that’s what Forever Young BBL can do.  It was proven in a 10-year clinical study — one of the longest on record to show the results of a skincare regimen.  Most patients received multiple BBL treatments per year for an average of ten years.  At the end of the study, doctors judged the patients to appear 11 years younger than their actual age.   In other words, they looked younger than when the study began.”

IPL photofacial treatments are typically spaced about a minimum of one month apart.  As with any medical procedure, results may vary.    As previously mentioned, consultation with Dr. Bowen is required before starting BBL treatment.

Side Effects and Risks

IPL Photofacials are FDA-cleared and non-invasive.  Side effects are infrequent, but when they do occur, they generally consist of some mild swelling and some redness .  Both typically resolve within a few hours after the treatment.

Patients can apply makeup following their treatment.

Please note that veins may appear slightly red for 2 to 3 days after.

Brown spots or freckles may look darker for up to 2 weeks following treatment.

Sun avoidance is required especially before but also after BBL treatment.
