HAIR RESTORATION

In the U.S. there are approximately 35 million men and 21 million women with noticeable hair loss. At age 35 40% of men will have hair loss which increases to 70% of men at age 80. Women’s hair loss generally starts a decade later and usually results in hair thinning rather than bald spots. This type of hair loss which makes up more than 95% of all hair loss in men and women is called androgenic alopecia and is affected by hormone levels like testosterone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estrogen, and thyroid. Other causes of hair loss are from chemotherapy or radiation treatment (telogen effluvium) inflammatory conditions such as alopecia areata.

At Dr. Robert Bowen’s office, we are expanding our Regenerative Solutions to address hair loss in men and women.
Non-prescription hair loss treatments include 1) Saw palmetto to decrease the conversion of testosterone to DHT and 2) Minoxidil liquid (2% for women and 5% for men) which increases the number of hairs that are actively growing as opposed to sitting quietly in a resting phase. These treatments are most effective in the earliest stage of male and female androgenic hair loss and can reverse or slow down the process. As up to 50% of hair may be lost before it is readily visible, these treatments are most effective when used before hair loss is visible in patients with a strong family history of baldness.
The stage where most people notice hair loss can be effectively treated with prescriptions and regenerative medicine.

1. Red light therapy (photobiomodulation “PBM”). The use of red and infrared light boosts energy production in dormant hair follicles and allows them to once again grow hair. (Patient-driven, done at home.)

2. Platelet-rich growth factors (GFs) from arm blood and exosomes from stem cells injected into the scalp. Concentrate growth factors that lead to the improved blood supply and follicle regeneration.

3. Prescription-strength minoxidil 10% and retinoic acid penetrates deeper and has a more robust effect on increasing the number of actively growing (anagen phase) hairs.

Each of these therapies works well independently but when combined has a powerful synergistic effect to reverse hair loss.
If a person (99% of which would be men) has very profound baldness on the top of the head then a hair transplant is a good option if there is enough hair on the sides of the head to provide donor follicles. If this method is chosen then using the previously described treatments will help improve the results of surgery.
